ENERGY COMPANIES LAUNCH ALERT TO CHAMPION LOCAL CONTROL IN TRANSMISSION AND ENABLE POWER GRID EXPANSION

It is essential that we balance the absolute requirement for a reliable electrical grid and its expansion with local economic growth, accountability to our customers, respect for local perspectives and private property, and a strong focus on the needs of the towns, cities, and regions that we and our employees call home.

A coalition of leading energy companies today announced the formation of the Alliance for Local Empowerment and Reliable Transmission (ALERT), a new initiative to reshape the national conversation on how transmission infrastructure is planned, built, and funded. ALERT will prioritize local empowerment, private property rights, and regional needs to ensure a reliable and affordable electric grid.

“ALERT is about balancing the critical need for reliable grid expansion with local economic growth, customer accountability, and respect for the communities we serve,” said Donise Dukes, Vice President, ITC Holdings, and ALERT Board Chair. “Failed federal policies are creating a race to the bottom for out-of-state interests to take over local infrastructure, sidelining local voices in the process. We’re here to change that.”

The coalition unites energy companies to counter decades of federal overreach, including FERC Order 1000, which has driven increased federal control over the electric grid, reduced community input, and slowed the expansion of the grid. ALERT aims to restore local control, which will ensure transmission projects reflect the priorities of towns, cities, and regions across the U.S. With that local buy-in, the grid will expand faster, and more power plants can be added to increase the nation’s supply of affordable power.

“ALERT will amplify local involvement and accountability as grid demands rise,” Alex Herrgott, Chief Executive Officer, Permitting Institute, added. “Misguided federal policies have stalled grid improvements, adding bureaucracy to transmission planning. Local companies and local communities are best equipped to understand and meet community needs while fostering economic growth.”

ALERT invites industry stakeholders, policymakers, and communities to join this movement. For more information, visit energyalert.org or contact inquiries@energyalert.org.
